Writing your own wedding vows is a really great choice if you want your vows to be completely unique and personal. Still, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a few lessons to learn from the more traditional vows too. To help you “steal” some inspiration, we have gathered some of the most popular vows in different faiths – so read on, find out more and create vows that will bring everyone to tears:
- Catholic and Protestant wedding vows are quite similar and they go along the same lines. The basic Protestant wedding vow is this: “I, ___, take thee, ___, to be my wedded husband/wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge thee my faith [or] pledge myself to you.” At the same time, the Catholic vows sound like this: “I, ___, take you, ___, for my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part.”
- Hindu wedding vows are very emotional and they can lie at the foundation of every healthy marriage. They are based on the so-called “Seven Steps”, each of which stands for a different “rule” the husband and the wife should follow in their marriage. The “Steps” include maintaining a healthy diet, nourishing each other’s body and soul, acquiring knowledge and harmony together, bringing up healthy and beautiful children, and so on.
- Jewish wedding vows can differ a lot from one denomination to another. In very traditional Jewish weddings, it is only the groom who says a vow (“Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel”). In the less traditional weddings, quotes from the Song of Songs may be used as vows (e.g.: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.”).
